New York’s fourth commercial casino, set to open in the Spring of 2018, has been renamed.
Empire Resorts, Inc. announced last week that the company’s $1.2 billion under-construction Montreign Resort and Casino project will now be identified as Resorts World Catskills.
Two Companies Behind the Change
In April, a subsidiary of Empire inked a license agreement with the Malaysia-based Genting Group to rebrand the resort casino as a Resorts World property.
Genting owns and operates Resorts World brand casino resorts all over the world, including Resorts World Casino New York. This property is New York City’s only racino, operating at the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, NY with 415,000 square foot of gaming space featuring Video Lottery Terminals.
Resorts World also has casino resorts located in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and the UK, and is in the middle of construction on a casino resort property in Las Vegas.
Name Change Based on Brand Familiarity
Apparently, Resorts World Catskills was chosen as the name after operators conducted a fair bit of market research.
“The name Resorts World Catskills melds the allure of the Catskills region with the prestige of the Resorts World family,” Empire Executive Chairman of the Board Emanuel Pearlman said in a release. “This recognized worldwide gaming and hospitality brand will provide us greater power to market our resort casino, which is designed to meet 5-star and 5-diamond standards, and provide regional, national and international exposure for the Catskills region.”
New York Commercial Casinos Still New
A referendum in 2013 authorized the issue of a three commercial gaming licenses in New York State. Tioga Downs campaigned to re-open the bidding process and was granted a fourth commercial gaming license later that same year. It became the first commercial casino in New York to begin operations when it opened in December of 2016.
The del Lago Resort & Casino in Waterloo opened its doors on February 1, 2017 and Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady did the same a week later.
The state’s commercial casinos have performed well so far, averaging more than $7 million per week in combined revenue.
ETA: March 2018
Resorts World Catskills is now expected to open in March of 2018.
Initial plans include an 18-story property with an 100,000 square-foot casino, including more than 100 table games, 2,150 slot machines, a poker room and private gaming salons. Amenities are also expected to include more than 300 hotel rooms, a 2,000-seat event center, ten bars and restaurants, retail, entertainment and indoor and outdoor recreation options.
