BetMGM is now live and taking sports bets in New York.

The sportsbook began taking wagers as early as 5 a.m. on Monday, though BetMGM didn’t officially announce it was live until 8:30 a.m. It’s unclear what the first wager in New York was placed on, but there’s a loaded slate of 12 NBA games for Martin Luther King Jr. Day to choose from Monday, along with an NFL playoff matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams.

BetMGM is offering a “risk-free” first bet of up to $1,000 to new customers. With this offer, users can place any wager on any event, and if it loses, BetMGM will refund the entire amount up to $1,000 in site credit.

In addition to the aforementioned promotion, BetMGM is also running a “free bet prediction” offer for Monday’s NBA game between the New York Knicks and Charlotte Hornets.

And if that isn’t enough incentive for new users, the following promos are also available at BetMGM:

  • Bet $10, win $200 on the NFL wild card round
  • Bet $10, get $200 on the Rangers
  • Bet $10, get $200 on the Knicks

BetMGM partnerships and New York

BetMGM, a joint venture between MGM and European gambling company Entain, has established a number of key partnerships throughout the state, including with Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers, and the MSG Network. BetMGM also has a deal with the New York Jets that includes a virtual Jets-themed online blackjack and roulette experience.

“We’ll now be able to fully activate our relationships with MGM Resorts’ Empire City Casino and Madison Square Garden.” Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM, said in a press release Friday. “We look forward to offering customers in New York unique experiences that they can’t access on any other platform. A huge thank you to the New York Gaming Commission as well as to our entire BetMGM team who have worked tirelessly to bring this to fruition.”

New York, which has a 51% tax on gross gambling revenue on sports betting (tied with New Hampshire for highest in America), is the 19th U.S. market BetMGM has entered. Among them are the neighboring states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

There are now five digital sportsbooks live in New York. BetMGM joins four other operators that launched online sports betting in New York state on Jan. 8 — Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Rush Street Interactive (BetRivers). PointsBet, Bally Bet, Resorts World, and WynnBET have plans to launch in the state sometime before the Super Bowl on Feb. 13.
